About BEG&C
Roorkee

The proud history and heritage of Bengal Sappers dates back to 1803 when Capt T Wood raised the Bengal Pioneers at Cawnpore. The Corps was found to be immensely valuable in the conduct of operations and it was therefore decided to raise Sappers and Miners units with greater capabilities. Accordingly in 1819, a part of the Bengal Pioneers were framed into Corps of Bengal Sappers and Miners at Allahabad. The remainder of Corps of Pioneers was absorbed into this in 1833. In November 1853, the Headquarters moved to Roorkee, where it has remained ever since. The Designation changed to “1st Prince of Wales Own Sappers and Miners”, in 1906, and in 1919 to “1st King George’s Own Bengal Sappers and Miners”. In Mar 1923, it was renamed “King George’s Own Bengal Sappers and Miners”. Post-Independence, the group has been renamed as Bengal Engr Group.
